A Sphinx's Guide to Questionable Answers
Published in 2004, $1,200
Printed in colorful typographic constructions, the text from the book is entirely composed of wood typefaces (from the collection of Art Larson, the longtime letterpress printer for the Double Elephant Press). Chiraroscuro woodcuts (woodcuts with one or more color blocks which produce both background & highlights) accompany this graphic text. The book commences with depictions of answers to familiar riddles where the reader is invited to guess what the questions are. Later pages of the book reveal geometry possibly used in constructing the Great Pyramid. Finally, included with the book is a printed key that names the different wood typefaces used in the book so that in the end the book is really a field guide to wood type.
